Surprisingly some of the best restaurants in Exeter are not actually in Exeter, but just outside it, and The HH restaurant in the village of Broadclyst, is a great example.
It was launched two and a half years ago by chef proprietor Craig Sampson and business partners Debbie and Stephen Hill, with the aim of creating a fine dining restaurant that provided top quality food in a relaxed and intimate setting. The discovery in the village of a couple of 17th century cottages which had been knocked together saw the realisation of the plan begin.
Craig already knew something about how to make a restaurant on the outskirts of the city work; he’d been in the kitchens at the nearby Jack in the Green for ten years. ‘I wanted to take what I’d learnt there and to apply it in a fine dining setting,’ he says. Now he and sous chef Luke Fearon are serving beautiful food not only to a neighbourhood audience, but also to foodies who travel out to Broadclyst from across the region.
The menu is modern European in style with an emphasis on local produce such as spring lamb from Whimple via Country Farm butchers in Ottery St Mary, and edible flowers and spring vegetables from nearby Maddocks Farm organics – supplemented by broad beans and peas from the restaurant’s large back garden.
As befits an intimate restaurant, attention to detail is everywhere, from the stylishly presented food to the high quality china and glassware, and of course to the service. Front of house is run by Alistair Grove who’s also a proprietor of the restaurant and his warmth and knowledge bolster the experience further.
In the summer, head outside to enjoy lunch in the lovely garden and also look out for special evenings coming up, such as the Loire Valley Dinner on June 20. April Marks of Regency Wines will present selected Loire Valley wines to match a menu of classic French dishes created by Craig. JR
