Strangers With Coffee

Expertly prepared coffee in a friendly, informal setting

There are not many baristas who reach the level of dedication achieved by Ivan Hewitt, so it’s well worth popping in to his coffee shop for a bit of caffeine-related chat. It’s a very friendly and informal setting, where creating your perfect cup of coffee is the top priority: ‘The best thing is seeing people’s appreciation,’ says Ivan.

A tea-drinking Yorkshireman, he became a coffee convert after visiting his son in Sydney. With his chef wife Susan, he first opened a cafe in Truro before moving to Wells to create his perfect coffee shop. It’s simply and lightly decorated, with a little outside courtyard, and good food from Susan – often matched to the coffees. Ivan has trained with Origin and Allpress and takes every opportunity to develop his coffee knowledge; on a day off, he’ll be out visiting top coffee spots.

His enthusiasm and northern charm is infectious and has seen the shop develop a loyal local following. ‘People who like good coffee come to us,’ Ivan says. ‘They’ll even cycle to us from outside the county.’ And if he is travelling and can’t find a specialist coffee shop? ‘I’ll make do with a cup of tea.’

Insider’s tips

Susan’s Mediterranean food caters for all dietary needs and is made with her chickens’ organic free range eggs.
