At first glance, The Sea Trout Inn in the sleepy village of Staverton near Totnes looks like the kind of pub that’s rapidly vanishing – there’s beautiful dark wood panelling on the walls, beamed ceilings and a maze of rooms and nooks that have developed over decades.

Few oenophiles can have missed the revival of English winemaking in recent years, which has led to an increase in both production and prestige. As you might expect from the nation’s mildest county, Cornwall has been busy taking its place among the new wave of vineyards. One of the newest is two-yearold Knightor, a winery and restaurant in the heart of china clay country near St Austell, whose 17,000 vines are planted in several locations along the south coast of Cornwall.

If you’d stepped upstairs at The Curfew before September this year, you’d have found a dark room filled with pool tables. Now it’s an elegant dining space flooded with light and filled with stripped wooden tables.

Chef Mark Payne has achieved the best of all worlds at his restaurant Mark@Street in Nailsworth by combining elegance with the sort of friendly, convivial vibe you’d expect to find at your local pub. He calls it “casual fine dining”, but there’s more to it than that.

On a rainy, dark autumn night, there are few places in the South West as welcoming to pitch up at as The Salty Monk, just outside Sidmouth, with its ancient wood door, lights glowing behind stone-mullioned windows, and traditional, cosy lounge. The intriguing name comes from the building’s 16th century origins as a salt house, used by Benedictine monks who traded their precious commodity with Exeter Cathedral.
