The food Reader Awards shortlist: Best cafes

In the run-up to the big reveal of winners on January 9, 2012, we’re profiling the shortlisted businesses in the food Reader Awards (sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers).

As voted for by you, here are the best in the South West in the best cafe category (sponsored by Brian Wogan Coffee):

Duchy of Cornwall Nursery Cafe

With its delightful setting in the Duchy of Cornwall garden nursery just outside of Lostwithiel in Cornwall, this is a newcomer to the cafe scene, having opened in July 2011. Serious about locally-sourced produce, chef Richard Du Pille uses fresh ingredients to expertly create simply presented seasonal dishes.

Relish

Owner Hugo Hercod is the most decorated barista in Cornwall, having done brilliantly at a number of international competitions, so it’s no surprise that his Wadebridge cafe is a favourite among Cornish caffeine heads. It also serves lovely home-cooked food and has its own stylish deli next door.

Archie Browns

These vegetarian cafes in Truro and Penzance are on a mission to bring flavoursome organic vegan and vegetarian food to a wider audience. Head chef Billy Trenerry’s menu gives classic dishes an usual twist – and expect good puds as well as savoury dishes.
