The food Reader Awards shortlist: Best local food products
In the run-up to the big reveal of winners on January 9, 2012, we’re profiling the shortlisted businesses in the food Reader Awards (sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers).
As voted for by you, here are the best in the South West in the best local food product category (sponsored by the Total Produce):
Mendip Moments ice cream
Jayne Lunnon’s delicious and award-winning ice cream is created in true artisan style with small batches made on the family farm in Haydon, Wells, using milk and cream from its own herd of Holstein cows. The 15 flavours of ice cream and dairy-free sorbets are available at independent retailers across the region.

BakerTom’s bread
Since Tom Hazzledine set up BakerTom in 2006 he’s been on a mission to change the way we think about bread by introducing people to his beautiful, artisan loaves. Now with a shop in Falmouth as well as Truro and supplying bread to the likes of Riverford Organics in Devon and Cornwall, he’s changing minds one loaf at a time.

Trevaskis Farm’s strawberry jam
The fruit for Trevaskis Farm’s strawberry jam is grown right there on the land and travels no more than a few hundred yards to be processed. Chef James Wearne uses whitecurrants to help the strawberries set and the jam is used in the restaurant as part of the puddings and afternoon tea, as well as being available to buy in the smart farm shop.
