The Horse & Groom is a 16th century rustic getaway in the village of Charlton, the perfect spot for sampling real ale in front of a roaring fire
Set in a picturesque Grade II-listed building on the edge of the Cotswolds, it’s home to new manager Emma Dall and team, whose great service will make you feel warm and welcome. Drop off your bags, throw on a hat and gloves and get all outdoorsy by crunching through the frost of the tree-sheltered lawns and paddock.
Your reward for outdoor exertions comes in the form of a satisfying pint of real ale, courtesy of Butcombe Brewing Co. Try a retro tipple from the ’78 range such as Big Geoff, a traditional English strong man ale, or the Christmas Special best bitter (available throughout December). Add a roaring open log fire and original flagstone floors for a Wiltshire winter warming experience you’ll definitely want to win.
When you’re suitably toasty and the ale’s been drunk, feast on wholesome homemade food from head chef Amber Southon. Prioritising local and seasonal ingredients, her daily-changing menu is full of rustic fare – we’re talking Ashton Press cider and honey lamb, Lyme Bay cockles and Butcombe Blonde beer ice cream.
And at the end of the evening, one of the five charming bedrooms with roll-top bath awaits for a good night’s slumber.
